The Sugar Content in Fruit Juice
While fruit juice is rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and potassium, it also contains significant amounts of sugar. According to a study reported by Medical News Today, some fruit juices can have up to 2 teaspoons of sugar per 100 milliliters. This sugar can contribute to tooth decay, particularly when consumed frequently.
How Fruit Juice Affects Dental Health
Sugar is a primary culprit in tooth decay, especially for children. The AAP advises against serving fruit juice in “sippy cups,” which can prolong sugar exposure to your child’s teeth and create a conducive environment for cavities.
The AAP’s updated guidelines suggest moderation for older children. For those aged 1 to 3, a maximum of 4 ounces of fruit juice per day is recommended. For children aged 4 to 6, the limit is 4 to 6 ounces, and for those aged 7 to 18, up to 8 ounces per day is advised. Diluting fruit juice with water can also help reduce the sugar content your child consumes.
